Sir Alex Ferguson has given his thoughts on Jose Mourinho’s opening campaign at Manchester United, noting that the Portuguese has invoked a promising style of football at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese finished his first Premier League campaign at Man United in sixth spot after sidelining domestic affairs in favour of the Europa League ever since reaching the semi-final against Celta Vigo.
Mourinho’s season will be viewed in a highly positive light if they can claim victory over Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday.
And Ferguson, reflecting on the 54-year-old’s first season, has noted that he has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
There has been a notable drop in potency since the League Cup win over Southampton back in February, but Mourinho can take pride in the way his side, battered and bruised, has managed to prise their way into a Europa League final – a game that will essentially define United’s season.
That said, he will be aware of the mammoth task that lies in front of him over the summer, regardless of whether United manage to secure Champions League football next year: the gap between Paul Pogba and those around him needs to be bridged; a designated, reliable first choice left back needs to come in; most importantly, however, he will need to find more goals ahead of a season where finishing in sixth spot will simply not be acceptable under any circumstances.
