Whether or not you agree that Romelu Lukaku is worth the £75million transfer fee that Manchester United paid Evertonfor him, you would have to agree the Belgium international is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and will enhance the quality of José Mourinho’s side.
The 24-year-old’s stats prove that. Last season, Lukaku scored 25 goals in the Premier League for Everton, while in 2015/16, he netted 18 times in the league.
Scoring so many goals for a team like Everton, who do not have a Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Mesut Özil or Dele Alli, is not easy, which is why one must respect Lukaku more and should expect him to bang in the goals regularly for United next season.
Surrounded by better players than he was at Goodison Park in 2016/17, the former Chelsea striker could take his game to a whole new level at Old Trafford.
Priced at just 4/1 to become the top scorer in the Premier League next season, the man who – per Oddschecker’s report – has scored more goals than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at the same age could fill in for Zlatan Ibrahimović at United.
True, Lukaku’s first touch needs to improve and he does not have guile of the Swede, but the former Everton star is very powerful and clinical.
A serial goalscorer, it should not be a surprise if he scores 30 goals or more in the Premier League. After all, he bagged 25 for an Everton side in 2016/17 who ended up as low as seventh.
An issue Lukaku needs to address is his performance against big teams, sides that United will have to beat in order to claim the Premier League title.
Last season, 21 of his 25 league goals came against the bottom 13 teams. The 24-year-old has yet to score in six games against his former club Chelsea and has found the net just once in eight matches against Tottenham Hotspur.
Lukaku’s record against Liverpool and Manchester City, though, is decent enough. The Belgium international has scored four goals in ten matches against the Citizens, while he has found the net on five occasions in 11 fixtures against the Reds.
Of course, one needs to remember that playing for Everton or West Bromwich Albion against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool is not easy.
Now Lukaku is at Old Trafford and will be surrounded by quality players such as Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Henrikh Mkhitaryan among others, he is going to get more chances and should
